Councilman Drops E-Verify Proposal

The proposal to require San Juan Capistrano businesses to use E-Verify is postponed indefinitely at councilman Derek Reeve's request.

has pulled from Tuesday's agenda a proposal to mandate San Juan Capistrano businesses use .

The item was postponed indefinitely at Reeve's request, Mayor Sam Allevato said Wednesday. (The mayor aids staffers in setting council agendas).

The council was set to discussat its last meeting Sept. 20, but continued the item when the meeting—which started at 6 p.m.—entered the midnight hour.

Reeve did not return messages seeking comment.

Under his proposal, in order to obtain a business license with the city, an employer would be required to use the federal electronic database to check the citizenship statuses of its employees.
