Jen Kessy Wins Again – But It Was Close

San Juan Capistrano's hometown girl and her partner April Ross faced a tough opponent in Spain on the Olympic beach volleyball court Wednesday.

It was a nail-biter for sure at the London Olympics, but “Kross,” as USA Volleyball calls the team of San Juan Capistrano native Jennifer Kessy and April Ross, pulled out a victory over a team from Spain in the third set Wednesday.

An NBC broadcaster called the beach volleyball duo “Team Heart Attack.”

Kessy and Ross took the first set 21-19, but allowed Spain’s  Liliana Fernandez and Elsa Baquerizoto take the second, 19-21. That forced a third set, which ends at 15.

“They really served really tough,” Kessy told NBC on air. “They kept serving that middle ball to me really, really tough. So we just needed to be smarter. We started shooting over the block instead of trying to hit as hard as we could.”

Kessy and Ross now have an undefeated record at 3-0 as they continue their march toward gold, entering the next round of 16 teams as the fourth-seeded pair.

After the game, Kessy talked about how much better it is to play in the daytime. During her last match, she .

“We get to play in our bikinis which were most comfortable with. My feet are totally normal. They’re warm, and I really felt great to be here,” Kessy said.
