New Car Wash Coming to Costco

CITY MANAGER'S REPORT: Also, a tower for the Ford dealership, a grand opening scheduled at the Mission and more.

COSTCO WHOLESALE CARWASH: The Planning Commission and Design Review Committee previously approved the Costco master plan for an addition, covered entry, patio dining area, and fuel station; all of which have been completed. The applicant proposed the last phase of the project, which is a 3,200 square foot automated carwash with attendant building, which the Design Review Committee approved Feb. 7.

OTHER DESIGN APPROVALS: The Design Review Committee also considered and approved driveway improvements to the Ortega Business Center, reviewed revised plans for the A-1 Self Storage facility on San Juan Creek Road and Vista Marina and approved its lighting plan.

TUTTLE-CLICK FORD TOWER: The Planning Commission approved the wall-mounted signs and the proposed 35’-0” tall tower with the Ford logo on the freeway-facing elevation and denied the free-standing pylon monument sign.

SPECIAL EVENTS: Applications are available for businesses looking to introduce themselves to the community by attending the San Juan Summer Nites concert series and business expo. The concert dates are from 6-8 p.m. June 19, July 17, Aug. 14, and Sept. 18 at Historic Town Center Park. The participation fee is $50 for San Juan Capistrano businesses. MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO GIFT SHOP AND ENTRY: The project is nearly complete and staff is routing the certificate of occupancy to city departments to provide final approval. A grand opening ceremony is scheduled from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 at the corner of Camino Capistrano and Ortega Highway.

NEW POLICE SERGEANT: Sgt. Tim Cullen joined the San Juan Capistrano Police Services team in January. Cullen brings with him a great deal of experience and professionalism. He began his career with the Sheriff’s Department in August of 1989. Cullen worked in the city of Stanton for more than seven years. While in Stanton, Tim was the recipient of the Sheriff’s Medal of Courage and two lifesaving medals. Cullen received this recognition because of his outstanding performance in critical field incidents. He was also named Stanton Officer of the Year in 2008. Cullen is happy to have the opportunity to be a part of the San Juan Capistrano Police Services Team and is truly looking forward to working in the city.

DEL OBISPO STREET BRIDGE WIDENING: The contractor installed irrigation equipment last week. Workers are continuing to work on installing irrigation equipment this week as well, and will be installing soil amendments, plant material, and trees next week. The road work for the bridge approach repair will occur at night next week. Construction completion is expected at the end of the month.

CAPISTRANO VILLAS ALLEYWAYS: The city and Homeowners Association have hired the firm of Labelle Marvin to perform a pavement assessment to ensure a properly designed repair. Final design is expected in April. Construction completion is expected by June 2013.

I-5/CAMINO CAPISTRANO INTERCHANGE: Phase 2 construction continues as an additional southbound lane on the west side of Camino Capistrano is added from south of San Juan Creek Road to the widened portion of Camino Capistrano by the car wash. This work is being performed at night. The project is scheduled for completion by March 15.

I-5/ORTEGA INTERCHANGE: Construction is currently scheduled to begin midnight Tuesday  and to be completed in May of 2015.

SMOKE ALARMS FOR SENIORS: American Red Cross is collaborating with the senior program coordinator and the Orange County Fire Authority Station 7 to bring the “Cause for Alarm” program to at risk seniors in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, May 4, 2013. Volunteers and local firefighters will be going door to door in the Capistrano Valley Mobile Estates and Capistrano Terrace Mobile Home Park to install new smoke alarms or check the functionality of existing smoke alarms.
