San Juan Man Slain by Police in Orcutt

Authorities say Kerry Flood, 52, was shot after attacking deputies with a cinder block at a mobile home park near Santa Maria.

A "violent confrontation" with two lawmen in Santa Barbara County led to the shooting death of a San Juan Capistrano man Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Kerry Flood, 52, was fatally shot by sheriff's deputies at a mobile home park in Orcutt, according to a press release issued by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department.

The deputies were called to the scene at 12:19 p.m. after reports that a man wearing only a towel around his waist was screaming and behaving in a bizarre manner, the sheriff's department said.

At the trailer park, neighbors directed the deputies to a mobile home in the 3900 block of Cherry Hill Road. There, deputies found Flood, who allegedly began attacking them with a cinder block, authorities said.

"During the violent confrontation, the deputies attempted to subdue the man using their Tasers, but were unsuccessful," the press release stated. "As the attack continued, one of the deputies suffered a serious head injury before the suspect was eventually shot."

Emergency medical personnel arrived a few minutes later and pronounced Flood dead at the scene. One of the deputies was seriously injured and taken to Marian Medical Center, authorities said. The other deputy was not seriously hurt.

Both lawmen will be placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated, which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting.

Flood was related to the occupant of the Cherry Hill Road mobile home, the sheriff's department said. KSBY-TV reported that Flood was visiting his mother.

More information will be reported as it becomes available.
