I thought the Patch was an online nationwide news organization that brought you things of localRead Moreinte rest and stories that might affect your lives. Was it once just a little local blog?

Hi Carol, we once had many more editors than we do now. But we were also losing millions a year.Read MoreOur new owner has lots of great ideas. First priority was getting rid of this current platform, which is clunky at best. The new platform debuts in a few weeks. We are also coming up with a number of innovations that should bring more local back. I'm very excited about the future. In the meantime, we are making do with what we have while we work on these changes.

@KDBMMM, perhaps you should spend some time investigating with the city and reading the codes?

The problem with too many (not ALL) developers is that they believe that philosophy of "Common Read Moresense will tell you, the more a developer can build on a site, the more money he will make, and the more money he can pay the land owner. Simple!" It's not so simple - a empty strip mall, for example, is not only a public eyesore but what if some historic property has been destroyed to build it? You don't get a do-over for that. Trying to cram as much as possible on your land for quick profits makes for over-crowded chicken wire and paste apts and condos that are so cheaply made their value is well over-inflated which then is re-valued downward every year. So who wins? The community? I think not.
William S Dean July 18, 2014 at 11:51 AM
Look, SJC has one and only one enduring "asset": The Mission and environs. Why not goRead Morethe full Monty and have EVERYTHING from the Mission down to the Rios BE "Old San Juan"? Why not move that hideous obtrusive parking structure down several blocks and make the whole "new" Old Town area pedestrian only? Take a cue from many Euro and US cities that have the downtown be Old Town (but for real, not Disney Old Town).

That day the left turn light was not working at all and we were stopped at the crosswalk. My youngRead Mores on driving with only a couple years experience was in a quandary as to what to do. I explained more than once that whatever we had to do would be "against the law" so just wait for a break in traffic and just turn left as that is what we were positioned for. FINALLY he took Dad's advice and turned but not before The Idiot behind us drove around on the right blowing the horn. Thanks a lot. Best not drive through downtown SJC in the afternoon if you're the impatient type.

Cynthia - you are correct which is why Jerry Brown's new Local Control Funding formula isRead Moreunconstitu tional. It deprives students in affluent district of a basic education. By any measure no scholl in the United States can educate a student for $6,500. Since CUSd has less than 10% population of English Language Learners we get the $6,500 Base Grant Plus $273 Supplemental Grant for a total of $6,773. By any measure - it requires a minimum of $9,500 to educate a student today. So Jerry Brown is depriving Districts that affluent school district swith less English Language learners and poor students of even a basic education.

I doubt that Dawn. But irregardless, in this blog you are attempting to interpret the CaliforniaRead MoreSt ate Budget. And you are doing it incorrectly.
Dawn Urbanek May 30, 2014 at 11:57 PM
To be Constitutional - the LCFF base grant should be enough to provide every student with a basicRead Moreed ucation - $9,500 then give additional money to schools with a higher percentage of English Language learners and poor more money on top of that. CUSD is one of the most underfunded school District in the entire United States. It is shameful. The STate should take over this District and be forced to fix our buildings reduce our class sizes and restore our programs. CUSD is being underfunded by $200 million dollars per year- an amount that cannot be made level through fundraising.

Penny, I think you owe it to the public to take down your one sided article or at the very leastRead Morepre sent a balanced reporting of the allegations AND the statement from Riley's Farm which clearly contradicts the allegations. Writing two separate articles with only a link to the Riley's Farm statement in your original article is extremely misleading to the public. Readers who do not click on the link are still getting a one-sided, very misleading account. You've published the teacher's name and slanderous allegations against her. The very least you can do is PUBLISH IN THE SAME ARTICLE specific quotes from the detailed statements provided by Riley's Farm that refute the allegations.
