Ways to Cool off in Summer: Custard, Jazz and a Good Book

The dog days of summer offer a lot in San Juan Capistrano.

1. If ice cream isn’t enough of a cold treat …:  If you're a fan of cold custard or Pennsylvania, or just like vertical green stripes, you'll want to know about Orange County's first Rita's location. The dessert shop with a cult following is now open in the Kaleidoscope center off Crown Valley Parkway.

2. Are your children up to the challenge? Ambuehl Elementary issued a “summer reading challenge” to kindergarten – 4th grade students in June. How are they doing?  Click here to download a summer reading challenge form.  If you would like your child to participate, parents are asked to initial a surfboard on the Summer Reading Challenge form for every 20 minutes of reading time. After filling in all of the surfboards (equals 25 total hours), students can turn in this form to their 2013-14 school year teacher or the front office by Monday, Sept. 30.  All participants who turn in a completed form (equals 25 total hours) will be invited to a surfer splash bash pizza party with Principal Curt Visca and be entered into a raffle to win a variety of prizes

3. Warm nights, cool jazz: Montego Restaurant & Bar serves up jazz every Tuesday. Tonight’s artist is Mike Debellis.
