The American Cancer Society recognizes the top three events in the United States who demonstrate a “best practice” in Relay marketing, communications and publicity with the Terry Zahn Award of Excellence in Communications.
Terry Zahn, who was a TV anchor and reporter in Virginia produced national Relay for Life recruiting videos and was a member of the Virginia Beach, VA, Relay for Life. He battled cancer in the 90s and graciously shared his journey with his audience. In January 2000 he lost his battle from multiple myeloma, a form of bone cancer. The award is given in his memory.
The award recognizes excellence in marketing incorporating the five D’s within Relay events--fundraising development, event development, leadership development, team development and survivorship development.
“Niagara Falls Goes Purple” on June 2, 2013 to honor cancer survivors was just one of the many feats that Margot Ferron, Co-Event Chair and Marketing Chair made a reality. As Marketing Chair, Ferron was given the award.
You may remember her fun and energetic “Post It Note Rally” in honor of Talia Castellano, an honorary CoverGirl and the “professional, YouTube Makeup Guru.”
Ferron is currently promoting the 20th anniversary of Relay For Life/ Mission Viejo. “One City, One Dream 20 years of relay …..just imagine the possibilities 20 years from now.”
According to Ferron, “Cancer is overwhelming and bigger than us all, but Relay is a unique way for us to create a community enriched by a tapestry of people who want to know their neighbors and share their love by helping one another. “
