San Juan Hills Supervisor to Receive Medal of Honor on Cousin's Behalf

Bob Nietzel is the closest kin to Alfred B. Nietzel, who in WWII, ordered his men to a safer locale while remaining in a forward position with a machine gun, holding off the German advance.

When campus supervisor, Robert “Bob” Nietzel, received a phone call from President Barack Obama on Friday, Feb. 21 he gasped.

Obama called to formally request he accept the Medal of Honor for his first cousin, Alfred B. Nietzel, who served in World War II after the Normandy invasion. He is one of the 24 recipients of this award this year.

Alfred B. Nietzel, was killed in 1944 by a German hand grenade.
