News of four friends – three from San Juan Capistrano – who died in a single-car accident last weekend in San Clemente dominated the week’s most-read stories at San Juan Capistrano Patch this week.

A car carrying five people crashed last Saturday into two light poles and a palm tree, splitting the car in half. Only one survived.

Readers were gripped and horrified as officials identified the victims as local residents. A video to which Patch gained access showed the friends playing pool and relaxing just hours before their death. And the open-to-the-public funeral services for one of the victims, a popular barber in town, helped spread the word to loved ones and friends.

In school news, word of Capistrano Unified Superintendent Joseph Farley’s impending retirement also caught the eye of readers.

With all this serious news, we thought we’d mention a runner-up to our Top 5 this week. It’s such a sweet and happy story, the “tale” of a dog lost to a San Juan Capistrano family 375 miles away from home, 16 months ago and his Christmas homecoming, that maybe we all need to see the video again.
