No. 10: Tasty History

It’s more than food and margaritas, El Adobe de Capistrano serves up a tasty bit of history.

The restaurant is designated as a California State Historical Landmark, a designation also belonging to Mission San Juan Capistrano. The El Adobe buildings— an adobe and a court and jail—were constructed in the late 18th century, long before becoming a restaurant in 1948.

President Richard Nixon’s enjoyment of Mexican food brought about a change in menu for El Adobe. He visited the restaurant when he was visiting the Western White House. Still on the menu today: The President’s Choice of chile relleno, a chicken enchilada and a shredded beef taco.
