No. 29: Barns With History

Cook Historical Barn, built by Russell Cook, reminds us of a rural, more genteel time. The Cook family still owns the traditional red barn built in the early 1890s, and there’s a pride in knowing its original owner took such an active role in the growth of San Juan Capistrano.

John Vito, who married into the Cook family and tends to the barn, has noted that one of Russell Cook’s legacies was helping build the 5 freeway.  Even though the barn is now used for storage, there are silkie chickens and rabbits on the property.

The barn isn’t on its original spot, having been moved by the city about 100 yards to make way for Del Obispo Terrace. Now the Cook Barn is that much closer for us to admire.
