No. 30: Adobes

No. 32: Walls With Stories to Tell

It seems like there’s an adobe on every corner in San Juan Capistrano. While they were built to house soldiers and the local Native Americans who worked at Mission San Juan Capistrano, each of them has its own story to tell.

The Montanez Adobe on Los Rios Street is linked to stories of Polonia Guiterrez and the legend of the 1890 drought and the rain she helped bring. Maintained and operated by the nonprofit Blas Aguilar Adobe Foundation, the Blas Aguilar Adobe is now a museum that displays Native American artifacts. The Rios Adobe is the oldest continuously occupied residence in California.
