No. 36: Bike Trail to the Beach

No. 36: a Path to beautiful doheny

Make a beeline for the beach on one of the most popular bike trails from town to Doheny State Beach in Dana Point.  San Juan Capistrano boasts many bike trails, but this route along San Juan Creek takes bikers and walkers straight to the coast.

Is this the "Trail" on the South side of the Creek (behind Capistrano Valley Mobil Estates)? If so, it dead ends going East into town (near the Veterans Memorial by Pacific Sales, due to the rail crossing). The beach end of the South side of the Creek isn't much better. As you near the Doubletree Hotel, you have to choose between riding down into the truck storage area behind Costco and straddling a 2' wide concrete path between the abutment of the PCH bridge and the slope to the Creek. The trail on the North side of the Creek is much easier to use, except that it has been torn up with detours out to Del Obispo off and on for the last few year due to work on the Creek wall reinforcement. I believe it is open now. The Westbound section on the North side of the Creek under Coast Highway washes out periodically, forcing people on to the Highway near A's burger. The section under the bridge is currently open.
