SJC Friends of the Library and dignitaries ceremonially break ground on a new bookstore.

The San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library ceremonially broke ground Monday on a project that has been years in the making: a bookstore in a new addition to the library.

The annex will be built in what is now the Bland Garden, a peaceful but “under-utilized” space at the San Juan Capistrano Regional Library, said Mary DeMers, president of the SJC Friends of the Library.

World famous architect Michael Graves designed the library and had to sign-off on the 735-square-foot add-on before plans could move forward.

The project went out to bid in July, but when bids came in $40,000 higher than the estimate, the City Council pitched in by loaning the Friends $60,000 interest-free for five years. Total costs are expected to be around $300,000.
