TV's COSMOS plus Voyager Spacecraft on Stage at the Regency

'Cosmos: A Personal Voyage’, a PBS TV docu-series which  inspired millions worldwide is being shown at the Regency Theater in San Juan Capistrano.   Written, produced and hosted by the renowned astronomer and science popularizer Carl Sagan, one episode is presented the second Wednesday of each month by an outstanding expert in the topic covered in the episode.  This is the series that set a high-level mark for subsequent science documentaries.

The Edge of Forever”  Beginning with the Big Bang, Dr. Sagan depicts the formation of galaxies and then moves into different dimensions like the imaginary Flatland and the idea of an oscillating Universe.  Other topics covered are dark matter, the possibility of a multi-verse, a visit to the Very Large Array in New Mexico and a discussion of the formation of the Milky Way. UCI  Astronomy Professor James Bullock (click here) will present.  He is Director of Cosmology and Director of the Southern California Center for Galaxy Evolution with an interest in using detailed observations of the Milky Way and its neighboring galaxies to address broad questions about the Universe.  Prof. Bullock can be seen on National Geographic’s Inside the Milky Way available on Blu-Ray and on Netflix.

Live demonstration of a Voyager spacecraft (click here) on stage, courtesy of the Jet Propulsion Laboratories. The twin Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft continue exploring where nothing from Earth has flown before. In the 34th year after their 1977 launches, they each are much farther away from Earth and the Sun than Pluto.  Both spacecraft are still sending scientific information about their surroundings through the Deep Space Network (DSN).
