St. Margaret Student's Art Soars

Karen Ahn's piece places second in an international contest.

A student has taken second place in an international art contest that challenged students to depict aviation.

Sponsored by the , this year’s theme was “silent flight.”

Karen Ahn, 13, of Irvine captured the theme with a drawing of a parachuting circle holding hands. Competing in the 10-13 age bracket, Ahn fell just behind Kyoko Sasaki of Japan.

 The 2012 International Aviation Student Art Contest began in 1990 as an art contest just for Orange County students, to celebrate the opening of the Thomas F. Riley Terminal, according to an airport press release. In 1996, John Wayne began coordinating its art contest with one sponsored by the National Aeronautic Association,National Association of State Aviation Officials, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration, in cooperation with the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.

Other international winners in the three categories (ages 6-9, 10-13and 14-17) were from Ukraine, China and India.
