Swallows Events an Example for Israel

San Juan Capistrano's annual celebration of the swallows' return serves as a blueprint for a movement in Jerusalem.

We all knew the legend of the swallows coming home to San Juan Capistrano was big. But this is international fame.

A movement in Jerusalem, accordireturnthe Jerusalem Post, wants to model a celebration after our own . Except they think we only host a week's worth of activities. Wonder if they knew the methods of our madness, would they still want to follow suit?

Let's back up a minute. In Jerusalem, a bird called the swift, which looks eerily like a swallow, follows a similar migratory pattern as our feathered friends here. Except they go to South Africa for the winter. In the spring, they make nests in the Wailing Wall, also known as the Western Wall.

The people of this historic town, theirs, not ours, seem to take great pride in the swifts. Reports the Jerusalem Post:

Although it is small – it weighs only 35 to 45 grams, according to the ornithologist – the bird is “a superior flier, an aerial acrobat. It has a thin, short body and impressive, long, scythe-like wings with an outstanding aspect ratio.”
