What's Trending at San Juan's Bilingual Video Store

Judging from the top titles at one video rental shop, locals don't necessarily follow national trends.

San Juan Capistrano and Lake Forest video fans don't always follow the crowd, judging by the current top rentals at Diego's Videos, which offers titles in English and Spanish at outlets in both cities.

According to owner Diego Cruz, who has run the small business for 22 years, English-language films shift in popularity quickly. But late last week, customers were crazy about End of Watch, a gritty Los Angeles cop drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña.

That's markedly different from the film's popularity on RottenTomatoes.com, which tracks nationwide DVD rentals. There, End of Watch ranked 21st in popularity, well behind such titles as Dredd and Breaking Dawn Part 2.

Another popular title at Diego's shop is A Better Life, which follows the life of a Mexican gardener living in East L.A., Cruz said. That film doesn't even crack the Top 50 at RottenTomatoes.

For Spanish films, El Infierno has been popular at Diego's. It's a violent drug trafficking satire made in Mexico.
