Campbell's Gaslighter Building Teleported to San Mateo?

Huh? They opened a restaurant in the Gaslighter and didn't tell us??

We opened the Merc this morning and did a double take when we saw a photo of the Gasligher building with a new sign on it that said Vault 164.

Huh? They opened a restaurant in the Gaslighter and didn't tell us??

After clearing the sleep from our eyes we looked closer at the article which featured-

  • A neo-classical building
  • Built in the 20's
  • Used to be a bank
  • In the center of a downtown historic district
  • Now a restaurant/bar

Other than the last item, it's no wonder we confused this building for the Gaslighter.

And guess what, they close at 11:00pm!

(In case you're new in town or don't keep up with these things, the most recent prospective tenant for the Gaslighter building insisted they couldn't make their restaurant/bar profitable unless they could stay open until 2:00am and lost their appeal of the Planning Commission's decision to uphold the midnight closing requirement of our Downtown Campbell Alcohol Policies)

Well, if Vault 164 can make it work in a historic bank building in Downtown San Mateo perhaps there's hope for Campbell's Gaslighter.

Any takers?

Would love to see someone come in with less profit motive and turn it into something special. Maybe a dinner/club that offers pop, jazz and blues, where people of all ages (including us baby boomers) could come and sit and eat, drink, and listen to some good music. Not too fancy or chic, and definitely not "Las Vegas" style. I think that Campbell is perfect location and could draw from all around the area, and enhance the downtown's destination appeal. Just need some high tech millionaire with a few extra million to spend.

I thought this was interesting too...until I went to Vault 164's website where they indicated that the bar is open past 11:00 pm. Unfortunately, it didn't say just how late the bar is open.

Wow, you're right Joe. The published hours in the Merc and on the website are for the food, with a cryptic message on their website that says "Bar stays open after closing." What the heck?
