UPDATED: Fire Out, One Ortega Lane Closed at Candy Store Until 6 p.m.

By Mirna Alfonso

Update 12 p.m. Saturday:

Statement from Jon Muir, Orange County Fire Authority Spokesman:

We did respond to Ortega with the Cleveland National Forest [firefighters]. It was their jurisdiction, however; we sent an initial attack along with our helicopter 2 and sheriff's helicopter Duke. It... had potential, but the quick attack by all jurisdictions prevented it from spreading. The fire was ruled "controlled" around 8:00 p.m.

Muir said the fire caused no injuries and the cause of the blaze is unknown.

Update 9:36 a.m. Saturday:

Fire crews have opened the Ortega Highway at the Candy Store.

However, the eastbound lanes at Nichols Institute Road are to remain closed until 6 p.m., the CHP reported, and there is one-way traffic control at the Riverside/Orange county lines.

The fire was knocked down and mapped at 1.5 acres but firefighters remained on scene for cleanup, officials said.

Update 6:45 a.m. Saturday:

Fire crews from Riverside County continue to work the blaze which, at least near the roadway, was tamped down by around 4 a.m., according to CHP reports.

The CHP reports there were still flareups near the highway as late as 2 a.m. Both lanes of the Ortega Highway will remain closed until 8 a.m.

Update 7:26 p.m.
:
Fire crews have asked the CHP to shut down Ortega Highway lanes on the west from the Candy Store and on the east from Nichols Institute Road in order to allow access to the fire.

A SigAlert has been issued.

Two fires were reported Friday on the Ortega Highway near the Tenaja Truck Trail and the Orange County line, south of the Candy Store, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fires were reported at 6:41 p.m., when a caller told CHP dispatch that flames could be seen going up a hill.

One of the fires was reported about 3.5 miles south of the Candy Store; a second fire nearer the store was quickly put out by neighbors, the CHP reported.

CHP officers immediately began turning eastbound motorists around and were waiting for fire crews to arrive.
