Make Way for the Race: Trails, Highway Closures on Sunday

Several San Juan Capistrano trails and the Ortega Highway will be closed starting at 6 a.m. for the Orangeman Half-Distance Triathlon.

Hundreds of cyclists will zip through San Juan Capistrano on Sunday for the Orangeman Half-Distance Triathlon, .

The event consists of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run. The bike portion is an "out-and-back" that takes athletes from Salt Creek Beach east through Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano and out Ortega Highway.

Twenty-five San Juan Capistrano residents are participating in the race, according to David Flournoy, a race director.

The bike course includes travel along the San Juan Creek Bike Trail, Paseo Tirador, Calle Arroyo, Avenida Siega and Ortega Highway.

  • Avenida Siega to Antonio Parkway (southbound lane closed): 7:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
  • Antonio Parkway to Orange/Riverside County line at El Cariso (eastbound): 7:30 a.m. to 12:15p.m.
  • Orange/Riverside County line at El Cariso to Antonio Parkway (westbound): 7 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
  • San Juan Creek bike trail from Stonehill Drive to Calle Arroyo from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Calle Arroyo from Paseo Tirador to La Novia Avenue (right lane) from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  •  La Novia Avenue to Avenida Siega and Avenida Siega from Calle Arroyo to Ortega Highway, (southbound lanes and east parking lane will be closed, maintaining two-way traffic) from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Two of five San Juan Capistrano City Council members voted against , as they feared the closures will be a detriment to residents and commuters.

The race organizers have paid to the city $222 for permits to close the trails. They'll also give the city 25 percent of proceeds made at a pre-event expo at and two and one-half percent of the entire event's net proceeds, but not less than $1,000.

They have also agreed to reimburse the city for staff time devoted to the event. The sheriff's department has billed them for $11,000 and the city will bill them for $1,960.
