San Juan Man Killed by Police Was an Environmental Advocate

A memorial will be held Saturday, April 30, in Santa Maria for San Juan Capistrano resident Kerry Flood.

The over the weekend was an environmental advocate who had worked for the Bureau of Land Management and, more recently, was involved in alternative energy research.

An obituary released Wednesday by a Santa Maria mortuary says Kerry Flood is survived by his mother, Barbara; sister; two brothers; several nieces and nephews; countless friends; and "his great love, Basma."

A Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department spokesman , who was shot after allegedly attacking two deputies at a mobile home in Orcutt, where he was visiting a relative. He was 52.

Flood lived for the past few years in San Juan Capistrano. "He cared deeply for both the people around him as well as the pets who chose him for their caretaker. One friend even described him as an 'animal whisperer,' " the Dudly Hoffman Mortuary obituary says.

"Kerry has joined his four-legged companion, Yukon, as well as his recently deceased father, Daniel, in heaven. We miss them all dearly," the obituary states.

A celebration of Flood's life will be held at 1 p.m. at Saturday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, at 4380 Orcutt Rd. Anyone wanting to make a memorial donation is asked to donate to a local humane society or animal rescue shelter in Flood’s name.
