Recall Group Fails to Get Enough Signatures to Oust Mayor Allevato

Leaders "terminate" the effort one day before the signatures were due.

The people behind the recent attempt to recall Mayor Sam Allevato have given up.

In a letter to city officials submitted Thursday, a group calling itself “Residents for Honest Government” indicated that it is dropping its efforts.

"The proponents of the Intent to recall Sam Allevato have decided to terminate the recall effort, effective March 6, 2014," said the letter, signed by John Perry and Clint Worthington.

Recall supporters were “just short” of gaining the 3,503 signatures needed by today, according to a statement Perry sent to Patch. The movement began in September.

“The team decided to refocus our efforts to work on the next San Juan Capistrano municipal election in November 2014,” says the statement.
