The real estate market is heating up, and now might be the right time to sell. But to maximize your price, you first need to make sure your house is "market-ready.".

By now, you’ve probably heard that the real estate market is finally picking up. For the first time in years, inventory levels are down and homes are selling! Interest rates are still at record lows, and a lot of buyers who have been waiting for the market to bottom are taking advantage of the good buying conditions.

Before you run out to plunk down your FOR SALE sign, you still need to take the right steps to prepare your home for sale to get the best price in the marketplace. Here are a few important tips taken from Trulia that will help you get your home ready to sell in this still tough real estate market.

  1. Make all necessary repairs. There should be no broken windows, appliances, etc. when buyers come through to see your house. The best condition brings the best price.
  2. Clean and de-clutter. Think of your home like a “model.” Windows should be washed, carpets cleaned, closets organized and the clutter removed so buyers can really see the amenities and value of the home. Dirt and clutter get in the way of that.
  3. Staging the home if necessary. A vacant or empty house never shows well and buyers don’t get the same feeling as if it was furnished. Hire a professional company if necessary.
  4. Price the house right! This is the most important. Most buyers looks at a lot of homes before they buy, and they know when it’s a good deal. They may dismiss your home right away if it’s over-priced and move on to the next one that’s a better value.
  5. Most importantly, hire a professional. A licensed Realtor is trained and experienced to help you maximize your profit and protect your most valuable investment.
