Looking for Experienced Equestrians to join LART

Did you know that there are estimated to be over 1500 horses
in San Juan Capistrano? During an emergency or disaster, taking care of large
animals requires advance planning and individuals who know how to handle and
move animals to safety. That is why the City of San Juan Capistrano is
including emergency animal response and evacuation operations in our disaster
planning.  This training is expanding to
be countywide, so we are looking for experienced equestrians from all over the
OC.

LART is made up of volunteers who will respond to help
evacuate and shelter large animals, such as horses, during emergency
situations. Team members have completed the basic LART course which includes an
extensive large animal handling training program to work with animals in
difficult situations.  The course has two
parts, classroom training and a hands-on lab.

To be certified to respond to emergencies throughout OC, experienced
equestrians must attend and pass both a classroom session and a hands-on lab.  Classroom training will be on Wednesday, March
26th at the San Juan Capistrano City Hall.  Check-in starts at 5:30 and pizza will be
provided by the San Juan Capistrano Equestrian Coalition.  Photos will be taken at this time for the
LART ID cards.  Training will be from
6:30-8:30 p.m.  Hands on training will
take place on Sunday, March 30th at the Ortega Equestrian Center
from 8 a.m. to Noon.  After successful
completion of both courses, you will be sworn in as a disaster worker and
receive your photo ID.
