Private Schools, Charter Schools and Homeschooled Students May Be Forced to Accept Common Core State Standards

The College Board is redesigning four of its testing programs so they reflect the Common Core State Standards and can be used for accountability. The four tests include the SAT, RediStep, PSAT and Accuplacer.

ACT has also announced its partnership with the Common Core Standards Initiative.

As a parent of a High School Sophomore who is waiting on results from the PSAT; and is attending a private school that has not mentioned anything about aligning its curriculum with the Common Core State Standards, I am curious how all of this will work out when it is time to apply for college. If changing college entrance exams to align with the Common Core State Standards substantially changes the tests, and our kids are not being taught the material that will now be on the test; does that mean that students that attend Private Schools, Charter Schools or are Home Schooled will be disadvantaged by the new testing? Or, will every school be forced to align its curriculum with the Common Core State Standards?

Adoption of the Standards was suppose to be optional. Of the 45 States who "voluntarily" adopted the new standards, 20 are already back pedaling. What a mess. Are we being forced into accepting what will amount to National Educational Standards that may be less rigorous than the standards we have in place. While No Child Left Behind set minimum standards for State curriculums, the Common Core is a ceiling. States will no longer have local control of public education.
