BLOG: Summertime Goals?

Volunteers, the next generation

The 2011-12 school year is nearly over. The good news is, family schedules will lighten up a bit, but now comes the task of keeping our young people productive, occupied and happy.

Throughout the years with my own children, and now with the grandchildren, parents/guardians tend to look at summer vacation as a time of what can we do to keep the kids entertained? Of course with every generation, the question we hear back is; "What can I do, Where can I go, i.e. What's in it for me to be fulfilled and happy?"

Perhaps this is a summer to turn the thought process around. Instead of our children being on the receiving end of things, how about encouraging our teenagers to give back by volunteering in the community. Local organizations are always looking and grateful for much needed assistance.

No matter what the child's interests, hobbies, or talents, someone will benefit from their positive attitude, a helping hand or just a friendly smile.

Of course, they'll probably ask you;  "What do I have to do?"
