Marines Invade San Juan Capistrano

Men and women of the 1/11th pour themselves into painting and planting and cleaning -- all a way to say thank you to the city that adopted them.

They came by the truckful and busful.

The U.S. Marines of the 1st Battalion, 11th Regiment "invaded" San Juan Capistrano Thursday to give back to the community that has adopted them.

Since 2006, the city has showered the 1/11 with love, service and funds for families in times of hardship

On Thursday, the Marines shows up in force to give back to San Juan Capistrano. Among the projects they had on the day's agenda:

  • Paint some areas at the Boys and Girls Club
  • Clean up and plant at the northwest open space and Los Rios Park area
  • Hold a mini physical fitness test and static display for schools that border the Community Center
  • Clean up the Community Gardens
The Marines were greeted by Mayor John Taylor and Councilmen Roy Byrnes, Derek Reeve and Larry Kramer --who joked that the morning's sprinkles were caused by the "marine layer."
