Family Art Day at the Kaleidoscope

Calling all artists!  The City of Mission Viejo, Friends of the Arts and the Kaleidoscope are sponsoring a free, Family Art Day on Sat., April 26, 2104 from Noon to 5 pm at the Kaleidoscope to celebrate the progress of “Bears About Town.”

“Bears About Town” is a one of a kind, collaborative project that the City of Mission Viejo and the Cultural Arts Committee/Friends of the Arts brought to the community to celebrate its rich cultural heritage.  The life size Bears are being transformed from fiberglass sculptures into beautiful, mosaic works of art.

Eventually, nine mosaic bears will inhabit the city of Mission Viejo as honored guests.  Each of these bears represents a different culture: American Indian, Asian, European, African American, Hawaiian Pacific Islander, Mexican, Persian, South American and Margarita (named for the family member who originally owned Mission Viejo).

Through art, many relationships and friendships have brought the community together developing a camaraderie like no other in Orange County.

The festive, art day will include live music by local artist and schools, many art stations, a keepsake bear memento (small fee) and free face painting

Also, you can compete in our community chalk art competition by posting a picture of your art on the Kaleidoscope Facebook page and Instagram.  The artist with the most likes will win and the winner will be announced at Arts Alive on May 4.

Visit the magnificent Bears in their studio on the third floor across from the movie theaters at the Kaleidoscope, 27741 Crown Valley Pkwy, Mission Viejo, CA 92691.

Many of the bears are complete, but anyone, any age or civic group can join in the fun of creating these diverse, cultural bears.   On Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm at the Kaleidoscope, you can volunteer on the remaining bears at the studio.

The transformation involves fitting small pieces of tiles, shells, rocks, glass and beads together to tell a story.   Volunteers are given an adhesive to fix the tile to the bear.   Later, grout is used to finish the bear and then a sealer will be added to endure the moisture of the outdoors.
