Small Concessions from Teachers Union could restore CUSD Elementary Calendar to 180 days.

The recently approved 2013- 2014 Elementary School Calendar gives students 177 days of school (three days less than the Saddleback School District, who used new LCFF money to restore their school year to 180 days). With some small adjustments to the Calendar, and no increase in funding, CUSD could restore it's elementary school calendar to 180 days too.

The 2013-2014 Calendar shows 2 Instructional Furloughs and 2 "Pupil Free Days" for elementary school children.

A "Pupil Free Day" is a furlough day for students but a paid working day for teachers. The 2 Pupil Free Days are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013 and Friday Nov 1, 2013 which would give students 3 minimum days and 2 full days off from school for Fall Parent Conferences. Last year the District scheduled 5 minimum days for Fall conferences. Enrollment is down. If the District went back to 5 minimum days for Fall Conferences it would allow the District to add one additional instructional day to the Calendar at no additional cost to the District.

The 2012- 2013 Calendar scheduled 4 minimum days for Spring conferences   (Tuesday-Friday, Mar. 26-29, 2013).  This year the District scheduled 5 minimum days for parents conferences. Spring conferences are limited to poorly performing students only. Do we need 5 minimum days?
