A 25-year-old U.S. citizen was arrested this week after Border Patrol agents found a quarter of a million dollars' worth of heroin in his car, the agency said.

The man, whom officials declined to identify, came through the San Clemente checkpoint at about 1 p.m. Monday, according to a U.S. Border Patrol press release.

The driver provided inconsistent answers when questioned and a nearby K-9 alerted to his car, officials said. A search uncovered that the back seat of the Chevy Impala was not attached to its frame.

"Under the seat was a non-factory compartment sealed with electrical tape. Eight bundles of heroin were concealed inside," the press release states.

The narcotics weighed 21.40 pounds and are worth an estimated $256,560.
