UPDATE, 7:10 P.M.: Police suspect Brown shot his wife first, Laguna Beach police Capt. Jason Kravetz said.
"We think it happened Tuesday in the very early morning hours,'' because that's when a neighbor heard gunshots, Kravetz said.
However, police weren't notified until 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, when they were called about the shooting.
Investigators suspect the couple was having financial issues, Kravetz said.
"They hadn't lived in California very long,'' Kravetz said. "She's from South Carolina and he's originally from Kentucky. They were in the process of moving back to South Carolina when this happened." Michael Brown worked in the information technology industry, Kravetz said.
UPDATE, 4:10 P.M.: According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, the name of the man involved in the shooting has been identified as Michael Brown. The female victim has been identified as Mendy Brown, his wife. Two guns were recovered at the scene, Kravetz said.
ORIGINAL POST: A 49-year-old Laguna Beach man apparently shot and killed his wife and dog before turning the gun on himself Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The grisly scene was discovered by one of the man's co-workers, who came to the couple's home in the 800 block of La Mirada Street after the man didn't show up to work. After entering through an unlocked door, the co-worker found the victims downstairs, according to a press release from the Laguna Beach Police Department.
The co-worker then rushed to a neighbor, who called 911 at 5:29 p.m.
"Preliminary information indicates that the male shot and killed the woman and dog before turning the gun on himself," Laguna Beach police said. "A handgun was recovered at the scene."
The victims' names were withheld pending notification of next of kin, but the woman was 47 years old. The watch commander at the Laguna Beach Police Department Thursday morning said he expected the names to be released in the afternoon at the earliest.
