'Blue Note Bandit' Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison

David Andrew Camp, 52, was sentenced today to eight years in state prison for committing 13 robberies primarily in South Orange County, including San Juan Capistrano.

David Andrew Camp, 52, was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in state prison for committing 13 robberies inside banks located primarily in grocery stores from San Juan Capistrano to Costa Mesa.

Camp, of Laguna Niguel, pleaded guilty to 13 felony counts of second-degree robbery. He was sentenced to eight years in prison in addition to the year and nine months he has already been in custody. Camp was also ordered to pay more than $26,000 in restitution.

Between Nov. 30, 2009, and Feb. 9, 2010, Camp committed 13 bank robberies in Orange County at different locations in Aliso Viejo, Costa Mesa, Dana Point, Irvine, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest and San Juan Capistrano.

The bank chains included California Bank & Trust, Chase, Bank of America, First Bank, Home Savings Bank, NuVision Federal Credit Union, Pacific Western Bank, US Bank, Wachovia, and Wells Fargo.

According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, Camp targeted banks located in grocery stores. Often wearing a hat and sunglasses in an effort to disguise his identity, he handed notes with his demands to bank tellers, and then told them to give him only large bills and not to hide any dye packs.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation dubbed Camp the “Blue Note Bandit”.

Camp’s Family members contacted law enforcement after recognizing him from media coverage of the robberies.  Following an investigation, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department arrested Camp Feb. 17, 2010.
