Camp Pendleton Fire Moving Rapidly North Near Cleveland National Forest

The fire has burned more than 500 acres as of 3 p.m. Saturday. Portions of it are contained.

A fire that started Friday at Camp Pendleton was moving rapidly toward the north where the base borders the Cleveland National Forest, officials on base released.

The Camp Pendleton fire department—along with mutual aid assets—have contained the south and west portions of the fire on the north end of the base.

Base officials are reporting the blazes have reached 1,000 acres, as of 7 p.m.

The growth of the fire in the northern areas has slowed significantly and containment is at 30 percent, according to Lt. Ryan Welsh, who is providing online updates.

Heavy smoke will remain visible throughout the evening as previously unburned pockets within the fire perimeter burn, according to Welsh.

There are no reports of any injuries or damage to any structures, and there is currently no threat to any structures on base or in the surrounding communities, according to Welsh.

The fire began at about 12 p.m. Friday during a training exercise in the Whiskey Impact Area.

Artillery units began training on the base Friday with Howitzer 155mm cannons. That training is scheduled to end late Saturday evening.
