An unidentified man committed suicide by hurling himself into freeway traffic near Avery Parkway, according to a California Highway Patrol report released Tuesday morning.
Around 6:30 p.m. Monday, the man first tried to jump in front of a moving vehicle on Marguerite Parkway, the report said. After that collision failed to kill him, the man ran into northbound traffic on I-5, just north of Avery.
"The man then intentionally hurled his body into the path of oncoming traffic and was struck several times" before CHP could arrive to stop traffic, the report said.
A Patch reader who was driving along that stretch of highway before officers arrived described the resulting scene as "horrifying."
The initial car that struck the man did not stop and was described only as a white sedan. The man who died had no identification. The Orange County Coroner's office will use his fingerprints to attempt to identify him.
Anyone with further information about the fatal collision is asked to contact CHP Officer Aaron Rothberg at 949-487-4000.
