Deputy Shoots at Alleged Drunk in DP

Sheriff's officials say the suspect charged at them on foot after a DUI Task Force pulled the local resident over. The round missed its target.

An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy shot and missed a 20-year-old Dana Point man as he charged on foot toward deputies who had set up a DUI Task Force in town.

Christian Tyler Goodwin has since been booked on suspicion of assault, resisting arrest and drunken driving.

At just before midnight Friday, deputies stopped Goodwin near Sea Terrace Street and Seabrook Drive, according to an OC Sheriff’s Department press release.

Goodwin “exited his vehicle and charged at the deputies,” according to the press release. “One of the deputies drew his duty weapon and fired one round at Goodwin. The round missed Goodwin and lodged in a nearby structure.”

No one was injured, the release states.

Orange County firefighters examined Goodwin at the scene and determined Goodwin had an elevated heartbeat, the press release says. So Goodwin was transported to a hospital.

He was booked Saturday morning on the suspicion of being under the influence of both drugs and alcohol, along with possible assualt and resisting arrest charges, according to the press release.
