Update: CHP Officers Arrest 38 Drivers in OC as New Year’s Approaches

For the California Highway Patrol, the holiday DUI-enforcement period has begun.

CHP officers arrested 38 drivers for suspicion of DUI in Orange County during the first 36 hours of the New Year’s holiday period, compared with 57 last year.

One person was killed on county roadways between Friday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 6 a.m., according to the CHP. There were no traffic fatalities reported in the same time frame in 2011.

The 36 DUI arrests only include those made by CHP officers and do not include arrests made by other law enforcement agencies.

Statewide, there were nine traffic fatalities from Friday night to Sunday morning, compared with 12 during the same time in 2011. CHP officers arrested 723 drivers for suspicion of DUI, compared with 932 last year.

In San Diego County, 47 drivers were arrested by the CHP for suspicion of DUI, and one person was killed in a wrong-way crash on state Route 52 in Santee that is suspected of being alcohol-related.
