Firefighters on the ground and in water-dropping helicopters battled a two-acre brush fire on a hillside orchard next to Interstate 5 in San Juan Capistrano today.

Firefighters were dispatched to Camino Capistrano and Avery Parkway at 10:50 a.m., said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.

"There are some homes above that hillside. Our helicopters are doing an excellent job in keeping the fire from these homes," Concialdi said.

No evacuations were ordered.

According to an airborne KNX reporter, the fire began in an orchard just south of the 5's interchange with the Route 73 toll road.

The area where the fire broke out is called the Northwest Open Space and is owned by the City of San Juan Capistrano.
