Updated: Amtrak Engine Blows Out on San Juan Tracks

The blowout occurred at about 12:30 p.m. and inconvenienced dozens of passengers.

Dozens of passengers were inconvenienced by an engine blowout that stopped an train near Avenido Aeropuerto and Calle Perfecto Monday afternoon.

The engine threw a rod, an Amtrak engineer said, filling the cabin with smoke. Another train engine had to come to the rescue, hauling the broken-down engine and passenger cars to the downtown San Juan station.

The passengers there had to disembark to wait for another train.

Initially reported as a possible fire, Orange County firefighters were on scene at about 12:30 p.m. A haz-mat team was en route at about 1 p.m. to suss out the situation.
