Grand Jury Indicts Murder Suspect

Robert Eugene Vasquez is accused of lying in wait, then nearly decapitating a neighbor in his San Juan Capistrano mobile home park. That victim died. Authorities believe he attacked again, two days later. That victim lived.

An Orange County grand jury indicted today , who is accused of murdering his neighbor and  two days later.

Vasquez, 34, is charged with one count of murder with a special circumstance for lying in wait and one felony account of aggravated assault, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s office. He could receive additional time at sentencing for using a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury.

If convicted, Vasquez faces a life sentence without the possibility of parole, according to a DA press release.

In the predawn hours of Dec. 1, authorities believe Vasquez waited outside the mobile home of Bobby Ray Rainwater with a knife and the intention to kill him.

When Rainwater exited his home, Vasquez first punched him in the back of the head, then stabbed him multiple times, “,” according to an earlier district attorney press release. He then fled the scene.

Called to the scene by neighbors who heard a scuffle, deputies found Rainwater, a 54-year-old registered sex offender, dead in front of his San Juan Capistrano San Juan Hills Mobile Estates home.

Two days later, Vasquez was arrested after allegedly assaulting another San Juan Capistrano man as he slept, this time with sledgehammer he found at the victim’s house.

That victim, local musician Lance Lyons, survived the attack when his brother stopped a second, potentially fatal blow. to offer emotional and financial support in his recovery from the injuries.

Vasquez is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
