As of approximately 3:26 p.m., firefighters and the urban search and rescue unit were attempting to hoist the horse out of the forest, according to a Los Angeles County fire official at the Altadena station.

A helicopter rescue was initially tried and rescuers did not have much luck so they tried heavy rescue, the official told Patch. The horse and its rider fell while on the unpaved Brown Mountainway and El Prieto Mountainway. The rider is uninjured.

The County fire department is also asking for assistance from the Departmental Air Rescue Team (DART), which is comprised of animal control officers trained for emergency rescues that involve helicopters and special equipment.
