San Juan Man Arrested in Mobile Home Park Slaying

Robert Eugene Vasquez, 34, is in custody for allegedly stabbing Bobby Ray Rainwater in a mobile home park.

Orange County Sheriff’s detectives arrested a 34-year-old San Juan Capistrano man on suspicion of fatally stabbing a 54-year-old man at a local mobile home park last week.

Investigators believe Robert Eugene Vasquez repeatedly stabbed Bobby Ray Rainwater early Thursday outside Rainwater’s mobile home. The break in the case came Saturday morning when Vasquez allegedly assaulted another man, said Sheriff's Detective Dan Salcedo.

“What led to his arrest is that he was actually a suspect in another assault Saturday morning, and during that investigation, it came to light that Vasquez is our guy in the Thursday’s incident,” Salcedo said.

Citing the ongoing investigation, Salcedo declined to elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the attacks.

“There are still a bunch of people we need to show pictures of Vasquez to,” said Salcedo.

However, the killing was not a random act, he said. “It was isolated and related to our victim.”

The cause of death was multiple stab wounds, Salcedo said. A witness reported seeing a man run away from the mobile home park after the killing.

Rainwater was a registered sex offender, but authorities have "no idea" if that was a factor in the killing. Rainwater lived in the San Juan Mobile Estates park with his elderly parents.
