UPDATED: Local Man Dies in Freeway Crash
The coroner's office has not yet identified the 84-year-old San Juan Capistrano resident, who died Sunday after hitting a light pole.
An 84-year-old San Juan Capistrano man died Sunday evening when his car hit a light pole on the Interstate 5, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The Orange County coroner identified the crash victim as James Chapman.
Officer Chris Goodwin said Chapman was driving northbound through town when “for an undetermined reason,” he veered to the right, hitting a light pole. He was driving alone.

The accident occurred at 6:35 p.m. Sunday on the northbound I-5 just north of Stonehill Drive, Goodwin said. Chapman’s Toyota Camry came to a rest in a northerly direction.
An ambulance transported Chapman to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo where he was pronounced dead at 7:39 p.m., according to the Orange County coroner.
