Man Killed in Fire That He May Have Set, Authorities Say

Firefighters were sent to the 60-year-old's Dana Point townhome early this morning.

A 60-year-old Dana Point man was killed today in a blaze at his townhome, which investigators suspect could have been deliberately started by the victim.

Firefighters were sent about 4:30 a.m. to 33655 Bayport Way, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Marc Stone said.

Firefighters found the man's body during a second search of the residence, Stone said. The resident, whose name was not immediately released, was declared dead at the scene.

It took about 20 minutes to knock down the blaze, which did most of its damage to the garage, with some moderate damage to the home, Stone said. He said there were multiple origins for the blaze, making it appear to be suspicious.

"We believe it could be a suicide," Orange County sheriff's Lt. Steve Doan said.
