Man Run Over by Train in San Juan Expected to Survive

Police say he landed between the rails and an Amtrak train passed over him as the conductor screeched the locomotive to a halt Saturday night.

A 31-year-old San Juan Capistrano man who leaped from the Stonehill overcrossing in front of an Amtrak train Saturday was expected to survive, authorities said Tuesday.

"He appeared to be injured more by the fall," said Lt. John Meyer, the head of San Juan Capistrano Police Services.

The conductor saw the man and immediately pulled the brakes on the train, which stopped after several cars traveled over the man.

The jumper's body was apparently prone between the rails, allowing the train to pass over him, Meyer said.

Fire personnel and deputies rescued the man from underneath the train, and took him to Mission Hospital.

Meyer said the man possibly had a broken leg and arm.

The jump, which happened at 10 p.m. Saturday, appeared to be a suicide attempt, authorities said.
