Pendleton Fires 70 Percent Contained

The fires, which began Friday, have charred about 1,200 acres.

The  leaving plumes of smoke which seem closer are now 70 percent contained.

That’s the word from Lt. Ryan Welsh, who is providing online updates.

So far, the fires, , have burned more than 1,200 acres, Welsh reported.

The fire began at about 12 p.m. Friday during a training exercise in the Whiskey Impact Area.

Artillery units began training on the base Friday with Howitzer 155mm cannons. That training was scheduled to end late Saturday evening.

The Camp Pendleton Fire Department and others helping out are beginning “mop-ups operations” along the perimeter of the fire, Welsh wrote in his Facebook update.

“Expect significant smoke plumes all day due to unburned heavy brush within the fire perimeter,” he said.
