Scam Artist Impersonated Cop in Dana Point

Police say a man used a fake sheriff's badge to pay for almost $3,000 in fishing equipment.

Fisherman? Police officer? Scam artist?

Police say the man in the composite sketch is a crook.

They say he spent two hours shopping for fishing rods and reels at The Jig Shop in Dana Point on March 11 and paid the $2,917 total with a personal check. But when asked to prove his identity, the man used a fake ID, according to a statement from the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
