UPDATE: Six-Vehicle Accident Injures Five

The collision in front of Mission San Juan Capistrano Saturday night blocked traffic for several hours.

UPDATED, 1:07 P.M. SUNDAY: The injured woman in the accident is an unidentified 79-year-old, according to Lt. Roland Chacon of the OC Sheriff's Dept. The woman was driving westbound on Ortega Hwy. and attempting to make a right turn onto Camino Capistrano from the left turn lane, resulting in a head-on collision with two oncoming vehicles. Chacon says speed may have been a factor as well, but stresses that the accident is still under investigation.

ORIGINAL POST: Five people were injured, including one severely, in a six-vehicle traffic collision Saturday night at the intersection of Ortega Highway and Camino Capistrano, in front of Mission San Juan Capistrano.

The crash occurred at 6:20 p.m. A large white passenger van involved in the accident came to rest on its side just outside of . A trapped female victim needed to be cut out of one vehicle. She was transported to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but alcohol has initially been ruled out, according to Lt. Jim England of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The accident blocked off the intersection to through traffic for several hours, though England says it was expected to reopen around midnight.
