SJC Man Pleads Guilty to Hit and Run

The July 2011 accident killed a young mother.

A San Juan Capistrano man pleaded guilty Thursday to two felony counts of hit and run in connection with a 2011 accident that killed a young mother and injured one man.

Jason Michael Roberts, 32, faces a maximum sentence of four years and eight months in state prison. The surviving victim and family of the woman who died are expected to make statements at his sentencing, scheduled for Aug. 3, according to an Orange County District Attorney's press release.

At approximately 1:45 a.m. on July 22, four friends left the Out Of Bounds bar in Huntington Beach after celebrating victim Harlan Coffman’s 24th birthday, the press release states.

They walked across a marked crosswalk on Brookhurst Street and almost made it to the other side when Roberts drove his 1992 Toyota Camry through the crosswalk and hit 24-year-old Oriana Millan and Coffman, the release states.

Roberts’ windshield shattered and caved in from the impact, leaving him with little visibility. But he drove off anyway, prosecutors said. Bar patrons who witnessed the hit and run called 911. Huntington Beach police and paramedics arrived shortly after.

Millan, who had a 5-year-old daughter, was pronounced dead at the scene and Coffman was taken to with a fractured skull and wrist, the D.A. reported.

Roberts drove 12 miles to Laguna Beach, until his car overheated and broke down on the street from effects of the collision. Roberts called 911 for assistance with his vehicle. .

Roberts may have had the green light at the time of the collision, so if he had remained at the scene the worst he would have faced was a ticket, according to Deputy District Attorney Troy Pino.
