Woman Jumps From Bridge and Lives

CHP and sheriff's deputies try to talk the woman down, but she jumps anyway from a bridge in Capo Beach.

An apparently suicidal woman in her 40s jumped from the Via California bridge in Dana Point onto the I-5 freeway Friday morning.

The woman survived the fall and was transferred to Mission Hospital, said Officer Chris Goodwin of the California Highway Patrol. The CHP had stopped traffic in both directions.

"We shut down the entire freeway to avoid her hitting any vehicle in case she jumped, and she did jump," Goodwin said.

CHP officers and deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Department tried to talk the woman out of the jump, Goodwin said.

The report first came in at 10:09 a.m., said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Sheriff's Department.

"The woman was on the ledge. They tried to talk her down, but she intentionally let go," Amormino said.

The jump happened at 10:25 a.m.

Amormino said she has a variety of injuries but is expected to survive the fall. The overpass is about 17-20 feet above the freeway.

The woman did drive her car to the bridge, Amormino added.

By 11:30 a.m., traffic was again freely flowing on the 5, Goodwin said.

I can call Monday, but it may be difficult to find out, as they did not release her name. Also, hospitals rarely release condition reports to the media anymore.

My daughter called to tell me there was a lady that looked like she was going to jump. I am happy that she didn't stay and went to school. My neighbor however saw the whole thing and was so upset and couldn't stop crying, the lady next to her vomited all over. It breaks my heart that this poor lady felt that she just didn't want to live anymore. My only wish is that they would get help and not put themselves in a place that haunts people for the rest of their lives. Thank God they shut the freeway down, I can't even imagine how someone would get over a person jumping and landing on their car. I hope she gets the help she needs. We are praying for her. I saw a CHP officer (in these pictures) in a blue uniform driving a white car quickly help another CHP officer shut down the freeway. He then quickly ran up the embankment, jumped a fence, crawled over another fence on the bridge and then crawled out to the lady holding only onto a wire fence while hanging over the side. That guy risked his life for her. Then, two other Sheriifs (in green uniforms) climbed out to him a few minutes later and were tying a rope on. The lady then started to jump and I saw the CHP officer trying to reach and grab her at the same time! I am glad he didn't fall too trying to save her while risking his life! Crazy what these guys go through! I wonder how they are after almost saving her life while risking their's only to see her jump! Hero's in my opinion!

Thank you for that account, Kelly. How harrowing.
